Psychotherapy and Counselling

Life can bring challenges and obstacles that keep us from living lives of inner peace and freedom. You might be suffering from depression, anxiety, or some other mental health issue; you might be experiencing issues with a partner that are keeping your relationship stuck; you might be having a hard time parenting your teenager or getting along as a family; you may have lost someone close to you; you may want to stop an unwanted behavior or addiction; or you might be looking for a deeper purpose and meaning to your life. Sometimes we get to these stuck points and don't know where to turn. We've used up all the coping strategies we know and we are now exhausted and lost! Therapy and counselling can help someone break through barriers and transform their lives and relationships. Finding yourself in a safe and inviting relationship will help you to explore new ways of thinking and behaving, as well as, allow you to be heard and understood by yourself and the therapist. It can also be a place for couples and families to work through issues that are keeping them from living in harmony. There is nothing wrong with seeking therapy and it is usually quite rewarding.

Individual Psychotherapy and Counselling

You and I will meet for 50 minutes each session. At the onset we will establish some flexible goals for therapy. Some clients come in knowing exactly what they want to get out of therapy, but that is rare. Clients usually do not know exactly where they want to focus their energies but feel that something is not right in their lives. We will begin with the very reason that motivated you to seek help. This will most likely lead into taking a brief history to give me a better idea of what has contributed to you and your problem. My approach is to be fully present with you in those 50 minutes. I will not tell you what is wrong with you, but will help bring out more of who you are by reflecting what I see. Sometimes we will be able to discuss general psychological truths that help many, but often times we will need to focus on you as an individual. There are no one-size-fits-all truths for all humans to follow. Your uniqueness must be a part of your healing. You know you best and I will work from this premise. Although I may help you and offer feedback and insights to you, it is ultimately you that accepts, knows, and integrates that information.

Couples Therapy

Couples therapy will also last 50 minutes. Again, we will establish goals based on your reasons for coming in. In Couples therapy, the couple is the client so I will always be working by that premise. I will not "take sides" but look to the issues that are keeping the two of you from connecting. Why do some people seek couples therapy? Intimacy issues, fighting, communication problems, infidelity, growing in different directions, and sometimes for relationship enhancement. Whatever the issue, couples therapy can be very rewarding as you experience ways to deepen your love and connection to one another. I value the goal of bringing two people together without losing the uniqueness and individuality of each person.

Life Coaching

What is coaching? Coaching fits into my services by being a future oriented, solution-focused endeavor. This is different from counselling that is usually centered around a current issue or "problem" that one wants to change or solve. It is also different from therapy, which is usually centered around how past experiences are impacting one's current mental and emotional health. Therapy can also be utilized for deeper personal growth that encompasses the past, the present and the future. Coaching is a way to take one area of life and improve it. It is a way to maximize one's potential by focusing on what one is going to do to improve, enhance, or alter their current situation. It is about excelling from where you are. It might have to do with exercise, job promotion, or performance enhancement. Where I might use counselling to help a client quit smoking, I will use coaching as a way to move beyond removing poor lifestyle choices to adding healthy lifestyle choices. Where I might use therapy to help someone deal with anxiety and depression, I will use coaching to help someone maximize their potential in their field or figure out what that field might be. I can see a client needing all three approaches (therapy, counselling, and coaching) throughout their relationship with me, but a person can also just seek one of these services for what they are looking for. We can always discuss your options during your first session.
